Dear Friends & Colleagues:

It's that time again when the FAR board will be meeting for our annual Board of Directors Strategic Planning Retreat.

At last year's retreat, the FAR board and Gold Resource Member attendees made the bold decision to create the FAR Conference. We saw that come to fruition in May and the board recently decided to make it an annual event. 

As my year leading FAR nears its end, I am honored to have been able to work with some of the best in the non-profit community that serve on the board and various committees. I want to thank the staff at CGG that provided all the support throughout the year; in particular, Christina Hartz and Ruth Nybro. Finally, I want to acknowledge Cris Collie for all the work he has done over the years for FAR. Cris helped transform FAR into the professionally manage organization we are today. We wish him all the best in his retirement.

Cris Collie - FAR Executive Director (2011-2018)

As we experience life, we also see different seasons appear - not winter, spring, summer, and fall - but school, early career, parenthood, more focused career, and then retirement, or in my case, re-careering. When I originally retired in 2008 from a 36 year career as a CEO of a trade/professional association, I re-careered in 2009 to start an association management company (CGG) with my son-in-law, Brian Gorg, and daughter, Megan Gorg. In the third year of our firm's existence, we were delighted to have the opportunity to work with FAR. Since then our partnership has grown and both organizations have prospered. 

Now, I have had a new change in the seasons of my life and have moved into a "paternalism" role as head of the Collie clan as my Dad passed away in early January, 5 days after celebrating his 100th birthday. During the same month, I celebrated my own 73rd birthday.

With this new season in my life beginning, this spring I notified FAR that I believed the organization will be better served in the future with someone whose age and experience is more aligned with the demographics of its membership. In addition to continuing to tap into Christina Hartz' skills and talents, especially as it relates to her stellar customer service relationship with FAR Members, I believe the CEO of CGG, Brian Gorg, is the ideal successor to me. His skills in finance, technology, membership growth, and leadership align with FAR's needs at this time. Periodically you will likely see me at FAR meetings as I will continue to serve as Chairman of CGG.  

Believing that the best music decade was the 1960's, I recall a 1965 record by the Byrds; "Turn, Turn, Turn, there is a season, a time for every purpose..." (adopted from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible) that pretty much sums up my own season in life.

Ruth Nybro, FAR Educational Coordinator (2013-2018)

The icing on the cake - that's what working with FAR members and staff has been for me for the past 4 ½ years.  The invitation to join FAR as Education Coordinator after retiring from NACo as its Training and Education Director matched my interests and availability, but gave me much more in return.  The FAR culture of generosity and engagement, evidenced at every level from board and committee meetings, to luncheon programs and, ultimately, to FAR's first full-day conference event made this the ultimate collaborative experience for me.  I'm delighted to have been a part of it and can only expect to hear more good news as you move into the next program year.

Make Sure You Know the Right Moves! Nonprofit Grant And Contribution Accounting.

Ever been out on the dance floor, and as the music starts to play... you pause - Swing or Latin? Salsa or Rumba? 

And then you realize you're not sure how to tell which dance you should be doing! Clearly, an understanding of how to classify the music would be helpful to moving along the decision tree and around the dance floor. 

Well... as a nonprofit finance executive, you may or may not find yourself on the dance floor making decisions about music and how to move, but you are definitely making decisions about revenue and how to record it. And as with anything, having clarity on what you're dealing with and how to deal with it are key.

NEW RELEASE: FASB ASU 2018-08 Lays things Out
When FASB released ASU 2014-09, Revenue from Contracts with Customers (topic 606) in 2014, it definitely caused the nonprofit community to pause - raising questions about whether grant revenue should be subject to this new standard as an exchange transaction. (Read more...)
