Operationalizing Racial Equity in Your Organization: Early Steps

Cormekki Whitley is Chief Operating Officer at CLASP. She leads all aspects of CLASP's internal management and operations. She also provides leadership on the organization's racial equity agenda and represents CLASP to other organizations seeking to improve their commitment to racial equity. Prior to joining CLASP, Ms. Whitley served as the Chief Operating Officer for a labor federation where she developed, executed and provided leadership for all of the organization's financial, operational and human systems matters. Her prior experience includes financial and donor management for a large community foundation and experience in the financial services industry. She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from North Carolina State University and advanced degrees from Meredith College and Northcentral University. She has a passion for understanding the mortgage markets and fair lending. Her published dissertation addressed the North Carolina predatory lending law and the availability of credit.
Jamie R. Riley is CLASP’s director of racial equity. He leads and coordinates internal and external efforts to enhance CLASP’s overall commitment to racial equity and justice.
Jamie has an extensive 15-year career as a social change agent in higher education and nonprofit administration. He has served in leadership and faculty roles at the University of California, Berkeley; University of Maryland; University of Alabama; Johns Hopkins University; and, Longwood University. He also served as executive director for the non-profit operations of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate fraternity for African American men. Jamie’s published academic research, which is informed by critical race theory, investigates the systemic and environmental impact of race and racism within American institutions and culture.
Jamie earned his bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration and planning and master’s degree in education leadership and administration from Tennessee State University. He also earned his Ph.D. in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia
Description: In today's social and political climate, calls for Racial Equity within organizations have become increasingly prevalent. As organizations adopt values that move beyond simple diversity, leaders can take practical steps to infuse Racial Equity into organizational culture and internal and external operations. In this session, Cormekki Whitley, COO and Jamie Riley, Racial Equity Director, will outline the Center for Law and Social Policy's (CLASP) Racial Equity focus and impart practical strategies for transforming organizational outcomes through the use of a Racial Equity framework.
- Be able to better define 'Racial Equity' and its use in organizations
- Understand the purpose of moving from a 'Cycle of Socialization' to a 'Cycle of Liberation'
- Have a basic understanding of how to implement an internal Racial Equity framework
