 Chair's Letter
Mike Tryon headshot
"Summertime and the livin' is easy, fish are jumpin'...lyrics by George Gershwin, famously sung by Billie Holiday

While many of us are preparing to experience that "livin' is easy" by heading to the beach or nearby mountains, things are "jumpin'" at FAR as we close out our fiscal year on August 31st...which coincidentally is the date my term as your Chair ends.  In this last column I'd like to bring you up to date on what is happening at FAR this month, the first few months of our program year that starts in September, and then leave you with a few thoughts on my year serving as your Chair.

"It's great to become further involved in a group with which I already feel so connected. I've made some great business connections over the years as a result of being a FAR member but, mostly, have formed friendships with people I might not otherwise have gotten to know. I look forward to helping the organization grow even stronger any way I can."

"I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to join the FAR Board this year and next. It's been almost a decade that I've been a member; yet, every year I'm continually impressed by the educational value, meaningful personal connections, and unique opportunities FAR offers. I'm dedicated to adding as much value as possible to the organization!"

Thank you 4
Thank you to our outgoing board members for their hard work and service to FAR!

"I am retiring from the association industry after 21 years with the Reinsurance Association of America and as I reflect back on those years, I can say that my time with FAR has been a highlight. I have been a member of FAR for many years, having served on the board on two separate occasions, completing the final term this month. I feel privileged to have been elected to serve the membership of this organization. I've watched it grow over the years and mature into the premier education forum in DC for association executives in the finance and administration field. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and for the relationships I've built with so many of you. If you ever find yourself in St. Augustine, Florida, be sure to stop in for a visit. You'll find me behind the counter at a community coffee shop, living the dream!"

"During my time on the FAR board, most recently as Treasurer, I had the opportunity to work with the board in guiding the organization to its goals. It is a bittersweet moment to roll off the board, but I look forward to continuing my involvement with FAR at luncheons and other events."

Wes
Wes Tomer, CPA
"Let me begin by saying how honored I feel to have had the opportunity to serve the association and membership. I truly feel that the last six years on the Board and as a member have been fulfilling, and have given me the opportunity to gain invaluable experience from the great programming but more importantly in the networking opportunities to develop lasting relationships and friendships from "all" members. It has been a pleasure to work with so many great leaders on the Board who have made the commitment to serve FAR. I know the culture and benefits of FAR will continue long into the future thanks to that commitment. For those of you still on the Board and to the future leaders I wish you much success in your deliberations!"

Membership Campaign Update
People
The Finance and Administration Roundtable is growing - but we can always use more members, especially members from the non-profit association sector! To promote additional growth in our non-profit membership community, our membership committee has developed a "Member Get a Member" campaign exclusively aimed at association non-profits. We have a one-page fact sheet you can pass along to your clients or prospects (click here to download). Please click here to download a form you can complete and send to the FAR office (email hq@far-roundtable.org, fax 202 962-3939) if you'd prefer to have them follow-up.

This campaign will run until the end of August, 2012. Non-profit members who join now at the $105 rate will have membership benefits through August 2013. Until the end of August, if you, as a current FAR member, sponsor a new non-profit member, your name will be placed in a drawing where you'll be eligible to receive awards (more on those later, but expect one of the prizes will be a round of golf at the Robert Trent Jones golf course on Lake Manassas, VA) in addition to the recognition you'll receive from your clients and peers. So, pass along the attached documents to your clients and prospects. They'll thank you for introducing them to the premier place for non-profit professionals to learn about trends in finance and administration, as well as advance their own professional development.

Strengthening Internal Controls Over Corporate Credit Cards
by Christian Spencer, CPA, Tate and Tryon
Although fraud will never be able to be 100% eliminated at an organization, understanding why fraud is committed and adopting preventative and detective measures to mitigate fraud is key to safeguarding an organization's most vulnerable asset: cash. One of the key transaction cycles that continues to be susceptible to fraud is an organization's corporate credit card program. In order to properly address the relevant risks, one must first become familiar with the three conditions that if concurrently present, can result in a perfect storm for the perpetration of a fraud.
