Dear FAR Members,
Sir Isaac Newton credited his ability to see things in the future by saying he was able to "stand upon the shoulders of giants." Similarly, in my term as your FAR Chair I have had the clear advantage of the work done before me by previous FAR Chairs...most notable is Wes Tomer whose leadership skills prepared us for the future. I'm also grateful to the other past Chairs, some of whom are still active in FAR; Naomi Balto, Chris Busky, Daniel Cassidy, Maria Christofi Georges, Jean Gooding, Patricia Lyddane, Thomas Nordby, Lou Novick, Paul Parsons, Craig Silverio, and Tom Sneeringer. So, with all due thanks and respect to the "shoulders of these giants," I'd like to use this Newsletter to give you a brief glimpse on our FAR Strategic Plan, Governance, Membership Growth programs, and your own Engagement. FAR had another successful and fun holiday luncheon December 7, 2011!
Holiday Co-chairs, Mindy Saffer (West, Lane & Schlager) and Christine Cardinal (Capital One), brought fun to FAR members and guests with games and door prizes.
A delicious luncheon menu was served before the activities began. From the lights to the poinsettias, a wonderful holiday atmosphere was created. Our luncheon was accompanied by perennial favorites, Winward Passage, a guitar and flute duo.

The introduction of Dawn Swan, Executive Director of Rachael's Women's Center, pictured right, this year's recipient of charitable giving by luncheon guests and FAR members, signaled the start of the first game.
A "Name That Tune" style game got everyone looking pensive trying to guess various holiday tunes. Once the song title was revealed, laughter followed with many, "I THOUGHT that was it!" responses. Door prizes delighted non-profit attendees whose names were pulled from the basket. Resource members generously donated restaurant gift cards, sports events tickets, consumables, and even cash!
To wrap up their day, attendees received goody bags with treats provided by FAR Resource Members. All in all, everyone had a great time!

| One Global Accounting Standard Coming Your Way |

Nonprofit leaders and staff with financial-reporting responsibilities should be aware of changes coming to accounting standards. The move toward a more uniform "global language" for financial reporting has been going on for several years and will affect most every type of entity, possibly as soon as the next few years.
The new standards-the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)-are generally aimed at publicly traded companies. However, since changes in public accounting have historically affected private companies and nonprofits as well, tax-exempt entities should stay abreast of the developments. Read the news lately? Everyone is reporting the same dismal picture - the local economy has stalled, the office market is mired in a downturn and if you are a smart business leader, you should wait until the current economic climate has stabilized before embarking on any significant moves.
Now, for the good news: In response to this information nonprofit organizations are actually using the downturn to actively resolve their long-term office space needs today. In fact, the local nonprofit community has taken the lead, paving the way for a dynamic shift in real estate. FAR Membership Campaign

The Finance and Administration Roundtable is growing - but we can always use more members, especially members from the non-profit association sector! To promote additional growth in our non-profit membership community, our membership committee has developed a "Member Get a Member" campaign exclusively aimed at association non-profits. We have a one-page fact sheet you can pass along to your clients or prospects (click here to download). Please click here to download a form you can complete and send to the FAR office (email hq@far-roundtable.org, fax 202 962-3939) if you'd prefer to have them follow-up.
This campaign will run until the end of August, 2012. Non-profit members who join now will essentially get 18 months of dues for $105. Additionally as a sponsor of a new non-profit member, your name will be placed in a drawing where you'll be eligible to receive awards (more on those later, but expect one of the prizes will be a round of golf at the Robert Trent Jones golf course on Lake Manassas, VA) in addition to the recognition you'll receive from your clients and peers. So, pass along the attached documents to your clients and prospects.
