FAR June Luncheon
"Leading Change from the Inside Out"
By opening his presentation with lighting a cigarette in front of the group attending the June 14th luncheon, Seth Kahan demonstrated clearly the effectiveness of leading lasting cultural change. But, getting to the point where society has embraced a change as far-reaching as the "no smoking in public places" can be a bumpy road. One FAR member in the audience described the process this way: "Hard in the beginning...messy in the middle...awesome when done."
Kahan, in his words and visuals, offered both perspective and process at the starting gate. The perspective piece starts with the question, "How will I have to change in order to change my organization?" Answering this question takes both introspection and research, i.e. spending time with people who are where you want to be and reflecting on any gaps you may uncover that will get in the way of your leadership. The second key point is to recognize that sustainable change is social. Rather than a mechanized plan, it needs to be fostered through the passion, interest, and concern of a voluntary community. It relies on "buzz" and giving those organization members who "get it" the opportunity to lead the charge. Seth calls them "the evangelists."
Organizational leadership remains the "brains and backbone" of the change effort, requiring vision, courage, alignment, metrics, coordination, and communication. Being aware and effective in employing these, the result is likely to be a community powered by passion ready to embrace lasting change. For a copy of Seth's presentation, click here.
