FAR January Luncheon
"Cyber Security Awareness and Response: C Level Considerations"
Dan Lautman's parting words to FAR's members and guests at the January program on Cyber Security was "When you do it right, nobody knows. When you do it wrong, everybody knows." And, the responsibility for doing it right begins and ends with the Executive Team. Getting up-to-speed on the motivations, methods, risks and protections against hacking was the core of Dan's presentation.
Using a live demonstration and many examples, Mr. Lautman reviewed the what?: what hackers are looking for; the how?: obvious and not so obvious ways they bypass systems and protections to access confidential information; the why?: how they look to exploit the information for gain, for fun, or for grudge; and the what next?: policies and applications that protect your data from being compromised.
Without an IT background, it's easy to leave cyber security issues to your tech staff, but it won't protect your organization from the actions - innocent or not - of staff and others who violate your policies. What can you do? Start by getting involved and show by leading. Develop clear policies and train and update your staff regularly. Enforce your policies and standards evenly across the staff; no exceptions! And, when you suspect that you've been hacked, be sure you have procedures in place for an Instant Response Team to address the event.
